Track & field is back at work Saturday
The JU track & field team heads north to compete in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday in State College, Pa.

This is the first meet for the Dolphins in two weeks since competing at the UF Invitational on Jan. 22. It’s also the final tune-up before heading to the A-Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 17.

“The venue and level of competition at Penn State this weekend will result in excellent performances,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “We have high expectations for all event groups.”

Last time out, junior Joane Pierre won the mile in 5:03.48 to pace the Dolphins at the UF Invitational. Junior Bienna Freeman took second during the mile in 5:05.06 and junior Charlene Charles placed second in the 800-meter with a time of 2:15.74 in preparing for the pentathlon.

Pierre, Charles and Freeman ended their day with sophomore LaToya Payne, finishing fourth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:53.90). Payne was also seventh in the 800-meter with a time of 2:19.41.

In the field events, junior Akeela Bravo recorded a toss of 42'11.5" (4th) in the shot put, while freshman Shanique Walker took second in the triple jump with a leap of 40'0".

In the 2011 Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup, the Dolphins broke the program record in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 11:42.29. Freeman had split of 3:33.9 for the 1200 and Pierre had a 4:58.4 in the 1600.

Pierre and Freeman also broke the existing school record in the 800-meter. Pierre set the new school mark with a time of 2:10.90 (4th), while Freeman finished fifth with a time of 2:11.39.
