Women’s golf set to host Courtyard Classic

The Jacksonville women’s golf team enters its spring season looking to build off the momentum from the fall season when they tee off at the Courtyard Classic on Sunday morning.

The Dolphins host the event for the third straight year at Hidden Hills Country Club, looking to dethrone two-time defending champion Daytona State. Rounding out the field is Mercer, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida Atlantic and USC Upstate.

“The team is excited to get its spring season started, especially with our home event,” said JU head coach Ashley Prange. “We’ve made some progress this spring and I’m looking forward to see how we handle tournament conditions.”

Jacksonville welcomes the return of Francesca Yong to the lineup, who missed most of last season and all of the fall recovering injuries. Yong will start at the No. 5 position for JU.

She joins a JU lineup that will feature senior Morgan Jackson, junior Gaia Olcese and freshmen Jessica Welch and Natalie Schmett.

Welch and Schmett have combined to form the 17th best freshman class in the country according to Schmett enters the spring ranked 201st nationally in the Golfstat Cup and won her first collegiate tournament this fall at the Wendy’s Invitational.

The first round begins on Sunday morning at 9 a.m., with the second round scheduled for Monday and the tournament finale on Tuesday morning.
