Dolphins defeat South Carolina then fall to FIU

The JU softball team went 1-1 on Sunday after defeating South Carolina 7-6 in their first game and then losing to tournament host FIU 3-1 in the second.

JU used eight hits and three Gamecock errors score seven runs and win by one.  Dolphin ace Sarah Sigrest (2-3) went all seven innings giving up six runs on eight hits while striking out six.

Centerfielder Kayla Ouellet and second baseman Karson Tuck led the Dolphins with two hits each.

The game was a back and forth contest with each team being unable to hold on to a lead.

JU took its first lead in the bottom of the third when the Dolphins put up three runs.  Catcher Sarah Simon hit a home run for the second time in as many games giving her two on the year.

South Carolina retook the lead in the fifth when they were able to plate two runs, but the Dolphins quickly responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  Shortstop Ashley Simon doubled down the left field line scoring the two Dolphins on base.

The Gamecocks tied the game back up in the top of the sixth scoring a run, but the Dolphins quickly countered with a run of their own.  Sarah Simon was able to bring home Ouellet with a sacrifice fly to center field that proved to be the game winner.

In their second game of the day, JU struggled at the plate managing to record six hits and left ten runners on base.

Junior pitcher Dale Townsend (1-2) was on the record for the loss going six innings while giving up three runs on nine hits.

Designated hitter Meagan Balding had JU’s lone RBI of the game in the fourth inning when she hit a solo shot to left field.

The Dolphins missed out on a scoring opportunity in the fifth inning.  After a leadoff strikeout, Sarah Simon and Amanda Schmidt both singled.  The Dolphin runners were able to advance to second and third after a wild pitch with only one out in the inning.  The next two JU hitters struck out however, ending the Dolphin threat leaving the two runners stranded.

JU (4-7) travels to Orlando on February 24th for a two day tournament hosted by UCF.
