Track & field wraps first day of UNF Spring Break Open
The JU track & field team had a stellar first day of the UNF Spring Break Open on Friday at Hodges Stadium in town.
Junior Joane Pierre led the Dolphins by breaking the school record in the 5,000-meter in 17:10.19 (3rd). Junior Charlene Charles had a personal best time of 2:14.35 in the 800-meter to finish second behind junior LaTonya Payne (2:13.67) who ran unattached.
“I couldn’t be happier with the performances we had for this time of year,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “The throwers started the day with excellent performances. Our victory was an all-freshman 4x100-meter relay. (We had) good races in the 800 and concluded with a school record in the 5,000-meter. You can’t get much better than that. We look forward to similar results tomorrow.”
Junior Akeela Bravo opened the meet with a personal-best toss of 170’8” for second in the hammer throw. Senior Laura Phillips (165’6”, 4th) and junior Sara Schunter (139’7”, 14th) also had personal-best tosses in the event.
The Dolphins won the 4x100-meter relay with freshmen Petra Munkacsy, Courtney Walker, Shanique Walker and Shadaey Campbell in 46.32.
The Dolphins begin the final day of the meet tomorrow at 8 a.m. with the discus throw. Fans can follow the action through the live results on halfmiletiming.com.
