Track & field rounds out UNF Spring Break Open
The JU track & field team put together another strong effort on the final day of the UNF Spring Open at Hodges Stadium on Saturday.
Freshman Courtney Walker won the 200-meter with a time of 23.81 to lead the Dolphins. Junior Bienna Freeman (4:38.63) placed second for JU in the 1,500-meter.
“Today was another very good day,” JU head coach Ron Grigg. “Akeela (Bravo) and Laura (Phillips) had excellent weekends in all of their throwing events. Courtney's win was a nice highlight and Bienna showed that she has great range to her racing abilities. Our goal now is to progress from here.”
Junior Akeela Bravo had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the discus (143’2”) and the shot put (44’0.5”). Senior Laura Phillips was on her heels after placing fifth in the discus (141’9”) and sixth in the shot put (43’2.25”).
Junior LaTonya Payne ran unattached in the 400-meter hurdles and registered a time of 1:01.65 (2nd). Freshman Shanique Walker was fourth in 1:02.74, while senior Stacey Young ran a time of 1:04.48 (11th).
Other JU performers included Sara Schunter who recorded a discus toss of 121’5” (16th). Freshman Shadaey Campbell ran a 24.88 (11th) in the 200-meter for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins compete again on March 17 at the UCF Black & Gold Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
