Track & field sweeps A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors
A great start to the outdoor season helped JU track & field teammates Akeela Bravo and Courtney Walker sweep the A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors.
At the UNF Spring Break Open last weekend, Bravo produced A-Sun leading markings in the hammer (170’8”), discus (143’2”, 4th) and the shot put (44’0.5”, 4th) to win the field athlete honors. The hammer and shot put were also personal bests for the junior from Trinidad & Tobago.
“It was great to see Akeela open her season at personal-best levels,” JU head coach Ron Grigg. “I look forward to her continued improvement throughout the season.”
Walker continues to get better for the Dolphins after winning the 200-meter in 23.81. She was also one of four freshmen in the 4x100-meter relay that had a first-place time of 46.32.
“Courtney is really starting to see the product of her hard work pay off,” Grigg said. “She is quickly earning respect with her range and level of performance.”
Bravo and Walker are the first duo to sweep the outdoor honors since Bienna Freeman and Ronnisha Hall did it last season on March 30, 2011.
The Dolphins compete again on March 17 at the UCF Black & Gold Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
