The bottom half of the lineup led the JU baseball team to a 5-1 win against Akron on Wednesday at John Sessions Stadium.

Freshman Garrett Ruckel, eighth in the lineup, went 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Dolphins (8-9) offense. Sophomore Chris Anderson (sixth) finished with two hits and an RBI, while senior Jonathan Murphy (fifth) scored three times and added a triple.

“We are happy to get the sweep,” JU head coach Terry Alexander said. “Our defense and pitching was good again tonight. We were also able to get some new guys to step up and lead us at the plate. We look forward to the day off before a busy weekend of games starting Friday.”

Sophomore Zachary Houck (1-0) earned the win in a predetermined start by tossing three scoreless frames. Junior Drew Woods allowed an unearned run and struck out two in three innings for the save, while freshman Jeff Tanner and sophomore Will Flor combined for three scoreless relief innings.

Matt Gebacz (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in three innings. Kevin Gamble surrendered two runs on five walks and two hits in two innings. The Zips (3-11) got two of their hits from Tyler Begun.

Anderson gave the Dolphins a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a single to plate Murphy who tripled to center field in the previous at-bat. Anderson moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Chris Moye.

The Zips walked the first three batters of the fourth inning and then hit Ruckel to score a run. Ruckel delivered again in the fifth on a two-out, bases-loaded single to plate Murphy and Anderson for the 5-0 advantage.

Akron scored a run on a JU error in the eighth inning, but Woods tossed a perfect ninth to secure the victory.

The Dolphins host Western Carolina Friday in the Wingate by Wyndham Invitational at John Sessions Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
