Sand volleyball downs FAU for first win, 3-2
The third time is a charm for the JU sand volleyball team as it defeated in-state rival Florida Atlantic, 3-2, for the program’s first duals win Thursday at the Dolphin Beach Volleyball Complex.
The Dolphins (1-2) swept the No. 2, 4 and five flights to earn the win in their final duals match at home. The Owls (0-1) outlasted the Dolphins in the other two flights in three sets.
“I was proud of how our team competed today,” JU head coach Michelle Collier said. “We put together a lot of the things that we have been working on in practice and it showed on our result.”
Freshman Sammie Strausbaugh and sophomore Niathan Cullen opened with a 2-0 sweep in flight two over Darija Sataric and Lauren Jones. In flight four, senior Kathryn Kane and freshman Chelsea Sanderson defeated Sara Stoll and Chandler Hatton, 2-0. Junior Alison Loeppky and freshman Jenna Orner won in straight sets, 21-11 & 21-18, to down Thaci Pereira/Cintia Nightingale in flight five.
In flight three, junior Nicole Teplitz and sophomore Alyssa Robertson won the second set, 21-19, to force a third set, but Graace Vega and Isabelle Arboleda won it 15-6.
Sophomore Kendall Courtney and freshman Cari Whitmire earned a 23-21 set two win in flight one against Joanne Maras Tate and Alessia Pizzocheri. The Dolphin duo closed a four-point deficit in the third set to one, 14-13, on a Courtney ace before the Owls walked away with the point on a JU attack error.
The Dolphins continue their busy week Saturday with North Florida Tournament in Jacksonville.
