Track & field starts prestigious Pepsi Florida Relays Friday

The JU track & field team will be back in action for the second straight weekend, competing at the Pepsi Florida Relays Friday in Gainesville, Fla.

“Florida Relays is always a fun and exciting meet to participate in and watch,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “The caliber of competition will be high, so the opportunity for strong performances will exist for everyone competing.”

The Dolphins continue to be led this outdoor season by juniors Joane Pierre and Akeela Bravo.

Last weekend at the UNF Invitational, Pierre broke the 1,500-meter program mark in 4:25.05 (2nd). She also finished second in the 800-meter in 2:07.67. Both times lead the A-Sun, while her 800-meter time is ranked eighth in the east and 12th nationally.

Bravo had a personal best in the hammer throw (172’11”, 2nd). She also placed sixth in the discus (148’9”) and shot put (43’05”).

Sophomore Svenja Meyer posted the fifth-fastest 5,000-meter mark of the program at the UNF Invitational in 17:39.02 (13th). Juniors Sara Schunter (145’0”, hammer) and Bienna Freeman (4:37.85, 1,500-meter) and freshman Courtney Walker (19’2.5”, long jump) all had personal bests during the UNF meet.
