JU men capture high finishes in SIRA
The JU men’s rowing team pulled off a pair of top three finishes in the Southeast Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) regatta during the weekend.
The men’s Varsity 8 boat with Andrew Soloway at coxswain was nipped by Georgia Tech in the B Final on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Soloway and his crew of Matt Outlaw, Scott DelVecchio, Andy Davis, Greg VanOekel, Bernard Vingilis, Jeremy Sobiech, Brian Cosmillo and Chase Rowe covered the course in 5:56.02 a mere 1.42 seconds behind the Yellow Jackets.
The men’s Novice 8 with David Waugh at coxswain and Jacob Strauss, Stephen Marra, Matt Thomas, Drew Allen, Jacob Motes, Chris Morgan, Shawn Macklefresh and Josh Holt as crew, took third in the B final in 6:19.49. Grand Valley won the event in 6:09.80 and Oklahoma City was second in 6:13.43.
In men’s Junior Varsity 8, JU finished sixth in the A final. Tom Richards was coxswain with Preston Weinard, Andrew Bechtold, Tim Easterling, Jared Lowe, Chris Ottie, Shane Kennedy, Brian Tye and Sean Carney on board.
The team travels to New Jersey for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships next weekend.
