Track & field places four on A-Sun Scholar-Athlete team
The JU track & field team secured more honors for the outdoor campaign by getting four members on the Atlantic Sun Scholar-Athlete team.

Seniors Laura Phillips (3.9 GPA) and Amalia Vogler (3.97 GPA) along with juniors Charlene Charles (3.78 GPA) and Bienna Freeman (3.41 GPA) each earned the honor as they led JU to its seventh straight outdoor title. Charles and Vogler also were on the A-Sun Indoor Scholar-Athlete team in February.

“We are incredibly proud to have four members of our championship squad make the scholar-athlete team,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “It’s rewarding to work with this team because they have their priorities in order.”

Phillips won the discus (153' 4") and finished second in the shot put (43' 7") and hammer (164' 11") at the A-Sun Championships. The discus mark was the best throw of the A-Sun season, while the shot put toss ranked third highest among the conference. Off the track, she is wrapping up his master’s degree in education and is a two-time Atlantic Sun All-Academic honoree.

Vogler, three-time Atlantic Sun All-Academic and President’s List honoree, helped score points for the Dolphins in the 800-meter (2:13.07, 5th) and the 4x400-meter relay (3:51.14) at the A-Sun meet. The 800-meter time was also the sixth highest for the A-Sun this season.

Charles scored 22 points for the Dolphins between three events in the A-Sun Championships. She won the long jump (19’9.75”) in the conference meet and finished second in the high jump with a school record leap of 5’8”. Charles also placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.00). She ranks first in the A-Sun in the long jump (20’0.25”), second in the high jump (5’8”), fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (13.91), ninth in the 800-meter (2:14.35) and 11th in the javelin (99' 10").

Off the track, the communications major has earned two A-Sun All-Academic honors and was named to the Dean’s List in 2010-11.

Freeman, sociology major, won the 800-meter at the A-Sun Championships with a conference record time of 2:07.63. She also had the A-Sun best’s 800-meter (2:07.16) and 4x400-meter relay marks (3:41.67) at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Freeman finished last season on the A-Sun All-Academic team and Dean’s List.

On May 1, the team was earned the JU athletics team GPA honor after recording a 3.411 GPA for the 2010-11 school year.

The Dolphins will compete as a group on May 11 in Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Invitational.
