Women’s soccer downs FIU, 2-1, in exhibition opener
Even in preseason games, coaches always want to see how their teams respond to competitive situations. The JU women’s soccer team showed promising signs in its first action of the season, posting a 2-1 win over FIU in an exhibition match on Friday evening in Melbourne, Fla.
Junior Becca Massip and sophomore Raquel Weckhurst scored first-half goals for the Dolphins, providing enough offense to secure the win.
“It was good to play against another team and we came out well,” head coach Brian Copham said. “There are a few things to work on, but overall, it was a good performance and it was good for our freshmen to get on the field for their first college game.”
Massip opened the JU attack, scoring off Liz Fink’s corner kick. Fink showed the playmaking ability she also demonstrated in 2010 when she led the Dolphins with seven assists. Massip, who netted two goals last year in starting all 20 games, displayed the offensive touch that helped her register nine points as a sophomore.
The Dolphins also saw positive signs from Weckhurst. The second-year forward capitalized on Jessica Hurtado’s feed for JU’s second goal, recording the game-winning strike. Weckhurst appeared as a reserve in 12 games last year and will be looking to expand her role in the new campaign.
JU will commence the regular season with a neutral site game against Coastal Carolina on UNF’s campus on Sept. 19. With a week before the games count, Copham said he’s been happy with his team’s progress as the Dolphins look to improve off a 13-5-2 showing last year.
FIU finished 11-9-1 in 2010.
“Overall, I was pleased with the effort throughout the 90 minutes,” Copham said.
