Women’s soccer wins third straight with 2-0 blanking of Florida Atlantic
The JU women’s soccer team continued its hot streak, posting a goal in each half for a 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic in the first match of the USF Tournament in Tampa on Friday evening.

The Dolphins are now on a three-game winning streak and have points in four of the last five contests. Senior Liz Fink scored in the 42nd minute and freshman Kaitlyn Bassett added the insurance marker in the 63rd minute to improve JU to 4-2-1 on the year. The Owls fell to 3-2.

Sarah Sierra posted her third shutout this season and second in the last three games. The sophomore netminder, who was named the Atlantic Sun Conference’s “Defensive Player of the Week” on Monday, has allowed just two goals in her last five games.

“We did a good job creating chances tonight,” JU head coach Brian Copham said. “I was also really glad to see how well we did attacking. Our defensive unit did an excellent job eliminating chances.”

Not even lightning and a driving rain storm could curtail the Dolphins. After the weather conditions halted play in the 16th minute, JU kept FAU off the scoreboard before Fink scored her team leading second goal of the season right before halftime. Coming out the break, JU sustained pressure and Bassett capitalized on Jessica Hurtado’s feed and headed the ball in for a two-goal edge. That marked Bassett’s first collegiate goal.

Fink continued her aggressiveness in the offensive zone, leading all players with seven shots. Bassett compiled five shots to add to her milestone goal. The Dolphins were also steady on the other end of the pitch, limiting FAU to just eight total shots.

Sierra finished with five saves. Since Aug. 26, she has stopped 29 of her last 31 shot-on-goal attempts faced and has registered two shutouts, blanking Northern Colorado, Furman and the Owls.

JU will conclude the tournament with a Sunday afternoon contest against USF. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
