The JU women’s soccer team scored three unanswered goals to post a 3-1 victory over Stetson in an Atlantic Sun matchup on Friday evening in DeLand, Fla.

Liz Fink notched JU’s first goal and Kaitlyn Bassett scored twice to improve the Dolphins to 5-4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Stetson’s season-long struggle continued as the Hatters fell to 1-7-1 and 0-1.

Two lightning delays didn’t deter the JU offense, which set a season high for goals scored. The Dolphins posted an 18-10 edge in shots.

“I was very proud of how we responded going down a goal,” JU head coach Brian Copham said. “After the break, we came out with good energy and created good chances that led to goals. Stetson is a hard-working team, and that’s what we can expect in every conference game.”

Stetson opened the scoring when Morgan Campbell found the net off teammate Alexis Hermosa’s cross. The Hatters scored in the 21st minute to gain the early momentum.

But JU responded before halftime when Fink (Cumming, Ga.) registered her third goal of the season. Becca Massip (Mission Viejo, Calif.) played the ball at the top of the box and delivered a one-time pass that Fink buried for the equalizer at 34:57.

“Unfortunately with a delay, it got us a little out of our rhythm,” Copham said. “But we responded well and had contributions from many players and started conference play strongly.”

Bassett (Littleton, Colo.) scored two goals in a 5:12 span to secure the game-winning tally and an insurance marker. The freshman put JU ahead, 2-1, off Adriana Rodrigues’ pass at 58:25 and added another goal in the 64th minute for the final margin and her first career multi-goal game.

Freshman Jessica Cataldo-Ramirez (Westlake Village, Calif.) and junior Eva Leeper (Weston, Fla.) assisted on the third goal. JU will look to stay undefeated in league play when it travels to FGCU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
