The JU women’s soccer team captured a share of the Atlantic Sun regular season conference championship on Sunday, earning the program’s second-ever regular season league title.

After finishing the regular season with a 7-1-1 record against the A-Sun, (11-5-2 overall) the Dolphins tied with Florida Gulf Coast and ETSU. FGCU lost to Belmont, 1-0, earlier in the afternoon and ETSU defeated Mercer, 2-1, to prompt the three-way deadlock.

When tiebreakers were factored in, JU earned the No. 3 seed and will host Mercer in the tournament’s opening round at the Ashley Sports Complex.

“We congratulate head coach Brian Copham and assistants Eric Dade, Katie Orr, Gavin Long and the women's soccer team as they have captured our first conference championship of this 2011-12 year,” JU Director of Athletics Alan Verlander said. “I’m very proud of the tremendous accomplishment of this team.”

The regular season conference title is the first time the women’s soccer team has accomplished the feat since 2000, when the Dolphins went undefeated in league play en route to winning the A-Sun Tournament and securing a NCAA Tournament berth.

The Dolphins will be looking to get back into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006 when the program won the conference tournament.
