JU Season Outlook: Defensive Line
Seventh in a series

Unit coach: Ernie Logan

Overview: If game experience means anything, the defensive line should fare well this season. Three of last year’s starters were All Conference and two of them, senior Rolando Fines and junior Mike Mayoral are back. They will be flanked by junior Chance Smith, who had a few starts in 2010, and the much improved Luidji Michel who has been one of the biggest surprises in all of camp. Logan is comfortable getting sophomore Juan Pimienta action and expects help from Jamaal Coleman, Charles Dowdy, Montavis Mack and freshman T.J. Jenkins.

Key Returners: Rolando Fines, Mike Mayoral, Chance Smith, Luidji Michel, Juan Pimienta.

Key Losses: Bradley Burns.

Promising Newcomers: T.J. Jenkins, Nnamdi Ofodile.

Unit Strengths: Experience and technique. All four starters have game experience which is a lot different than working in drills and practice. The group is good at technique and takes coaching well and plays with good motors.

Unit Weaknesses: Not in all areas, but the group might be a little undersized but there are plenty of times when good techinique and leverage wins out over size and strength.

Coaches Quote: “We can be dominating and I expect us to be. The front four played well game in and game out last year. When you play with heart and leave it out on the field, that’s a good formula for success.’’ – Ernie Logan
