Jacksonville coach Kerwin Bell had said all week that the only thing he knew was for his 0-2 team to work harder. They did; it worked.

The Dolphins, led by running back J.J. Lasters 128 rushing yards and a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Josh McGregor, won a second-half track meet to beat Charleston Southern 37-30 at D. B. Milne Field here Saturday.

“I said hard work was the answer, ‘’ Bell said. “Our guys worked all week and it paid off today.’’

JU’s fireworks started on the first play of the game when corner back Colby Walden returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown which was all the scoring in the first quarter.

The teams traded scores in the second period, JU on a 1-yard run by Keith Dawson and the Bucs on a 3-yard carry from B.J. Hackworth, who is from Jacksonville, with :31 to play.

After JU’s Bladen Gudz connected on a 35-yard field goal to open the third quarter, the teams traded points in bunches.

CSU (0-3) scored back to back with a pair of drives that were long on yardage and short on time. Hackworth scored on a 12-yard run to cap a five-play 77 yard effort that took only one minute and 33 seconds and tight end Carson Leshin caught a 25-yard pass from Malcolm Dixon to end an eight-play, 80-yard drive that took 3:10.

The Dolphins (1-2) bounced back on an 8-yard scoring run by Laster and a McGregor to Josh Philpart 15-yard pass for a 30-23 lead.

The Bucs responded with a 62-yard drive that ended with Dixon running in from the 3 to tie at 30-all with 7:02 to play.

JU’s winning drive started on its own 39 and ended with McGregor hitting tight end Quintin Davis on a 42-yard score with 4:20 to go. The drive was highlighted by a critical third down and 12 to go McGregor to Philpart pass that went for 15 yards

“That was a huge play,’’ McGregor said. The touchdown pass was the 92nd of McGregor’s career, tying him for 14th on the all time list with Ted White who played at Howard from 1995-98.

The teams traded punts and JU put an end to the game when Walden intercept a Dixon pass with 34 seconds to play. Davis had four catches for 117 yards and Philpart five receptions for 72 yards for the game while junior Mike Mayoral led the defense with eight tackles and a sack.

The Dolphins begin play in the Pioneer Football League next week as they travel to Campbell.
