Florida leads Sea Best Invitational after day one

Amid tough scoring conditions, defending champion Florida fired a four-under par round in the afternoon to hold an 11-shot lead entering the final round of the 2012 Sea Best Seafood Invitational.

The Gators, who posted a tournament record five-under par round last year en route to the title, shot a 15-over par, 303, in the first round before answering with just the fourth team round under par in the event’s history.

Florida’s T.J. Vogel leads the individual competition, carding rounds of 73 and 69, to be one of two players under par after 36 holes at two-under par. He leads Florida Gulf Coast’s Brandon Pena, who shot rounds of 70 and 73, to finish at one-under par.

Jacksonville University is in 10th place after two rounds, led by junior Jamey Salmon who posted a pair of 73s to tie for fifth at two-over par, just four shots out of the lead. The Dolphins posted a 29-over par, 317, in the first round and followed with a 17-over par, 305, in the second round.

JU got rounds of 80 and 78 from Brett McKinnon, who is tied for 43rd at 14-over par. Nick Torrance opened with an 83 and followed with a four-over par 76 to tie for 46th at 15-over par. Taylor Szyndlar tied for 57th at 20-over par after rounds of 81 and 83. Bobby Fredeking rounded out the scoring for JU with rounds of 89 and 78 to finish in a tie for 62nd at 23-over par.

Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. on the first and 10th tees.
