Close loss for JU men in MAAC opener
The Jacksonville men’s lacrosse team began its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season with a 9-7 loss at Marist Saturday.
JU’s Cameron Mann scored a goal and had four assists and both Donovan Lange and Conor Igoe had two goals each.
For Mann, it marked the 35th consecutive game, every game in school history, that he has scored at least one point.
Down 1-0, Mann got the Dolphins (3-4) on the board with 11:45 to play in the first quarter with a goal but JU fell behind 4-1 before launching a comeback in the game played in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
The effort got the Dolphins to a 4-4 tie with 12:02 to play in the second quarter on Igoe’s second score.
The Red Foxes then scored four consecutive goals which had them leading 8-3 at the end of three.
JU fought back and got to within one at 8-7 with 7:51 to play when Lange took advantage of a man-up situation and had his second goal of the day, this one on an assist my Max Gurowski.
TJ Kenary and Ari Waffle had the other scores for JU.
Tanner Gard had six ground balls for the Dolphins while goal keeper Pete DeLuca had five and recorded 13 saves. Charlie Archer had a pair of caused turnovers.
JU plays host MAAC opponent VMI Saturday at 1 p.m.
