The JU athletic department, in conjunction with the JEDC and the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, will be hosting the inaugural season of the FC Jax Destroyers premier-level soccer team at the Ashley Sports Complex this summer, it was announced on Monday.

The Destroyers, who will compete in the United Soccer League (USL), start their eight game home schedule at JU on May 16 against the Mississippi Brilla. The organization plans to add a women’s team for the W-League next summer.

“Our university has a proud history of soccer and we're excited to partner with another soccer group that will bring exposure to the sport and JU," said director of athletics Alan Verlander. “This should be a fun league that all fans can enjoy during the summer.”

The team will work in a similar Cape Cod-type baseball fashion with high school and college-level players who will not be paid to keep their amateur status. The Destroyers look to feature several local Jacksonville connections on their roster.

The Destroyers also tabbed Eric Dutt, an assistant coach at Stetson University, as its first head coach.
