Hottner makes preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team
For the second straight year, defender Tobias Hottner was recognized as one of the conference’s top players, earning Atlantic Sun preseason all-conference honors, the league announced on Wednesday.
Hottner was selected as one of three defenders; a distinction he also earned before last season. The senior will be looking to build off a campaign in which he led a defense that allowed one goal or fewer in 13 of the team’s 20 games. Hottner also keyed a defensive unit that posted shutouts against Alabama A&M and A-Sun rivals USC Upstate and UNF.
“It’s a well-deserved honor for Tobbias,” JU head coach Mike Johnson said. “Hopefully, this will motivate him to play at that level throughout the season.”
The Dolphins were voted fourth in the preseason men’s coaches’ poll. JU compiled 49 points and moved up two spots from last year. Florida Gulf Coast University was tabbed as the preseason favorite with 77 points and five first-place votes. ETSU (76 points) and Stetson (59) were the only other schools to be picked ahead of the Dolphins.
“I think it’s an adequate position based on how we finished last season,” Johnson said about the predicted order of finish. “Most of the coaches realize we have 10 starters back. But based on people ahead of us, they also have the same amount of starters returning, so the rankings as they stand right now are pretty accurate.
“But championships are always won on the field. I feel like we’ll be in a good position to compete for a title."
The Dolphins were picked in the top-four for the fourth time in five years after going 9-9-2 last year. JU defeated Mercer in the A-Sun quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals before dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker to Stetson.
ETSU’s Itode Fubara was named the preseason “Player of the Year” and FGCU’s Adam Glick earned “Defensive Player of the Year” honors.
JU will kick off the 2011 campaign with three home exhibition games before hosting UCF in the regular season opener at Ashley Sports Complex on Aug. 26. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
