Construction set to begin on Southern Oak Stadium
The construction boom for Jacksonville University athletics continues as the men’s and women’s soccer programs will have a new home this fall with the completion of Southern Oak Stadium.

Southern Oak Stadium will bring 500 permanent seats, professional style dugouts, a new press box and luxury VIP suite to the Ashley Sports Complex that will serve as the home venue for the two soccer programs at JU. The Luxury Suite will be named the Loughman Cottage and will be able to accommodate 40 people.

“Thanks to our lead donor Tony Loughman, Vulcan Materials, and several former soccer alumni, our soccer programs will have a tremendous facility in which to showcase their talents on the field,” said JU director of athletics Alan Verlander. “This project is a testament to our donors seeing our vision for the future of JU athletics and soccer to invest in making our facilities a true advantage.”

Construction of the stadium is expected to take eight weeks and will disrupt the opening of the season. Fans are encouraged to bring their own seating and sit on the east side of the new stadium. The project goal is to officially finish and dedicate the stadium Homecoming weekend when the men’s team takes on cross-town rival UNF on Saturday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m.

“I’m proud to see this project begin and know that this will make a huge impact for our soccer programs in the coming years,” Loughman said. “I know how hard these young men and women work on the field and I’ve been blessed to be able to make this donation back to JU in an effort to continue building championship programs. My hope is that other alums will join me in helping JU Athletics continue to build first-class facilities.”

Anyone interested in making a donation to help with the project can contact Joel Lamp or Terry Norvelle in the JU athletics department at (904) 256-7400.
