The JU men’s soccer team scored a penalty-kick goal for the second straight game, but UC Riverside netted the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute as the Dolphins lost, 2-1, to the Highlanders in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex.

Senior Stefan Durr (Garmisch, Germany) gave JU a goal off a PK for the second straight game after Davide Faga accomplished the feat on Friday in a win over George Washington. UC Riverside responded on Cesar Diaz Pizzaro’s goal from the left side of the box at 71:35. The Dolphins fell to 2-5-1 while the Highlanders improved to 5-2-1.

Senior goalkeeper Johnny Foley (Castle Rock, Colo.) made all three of his saves in the second half, including a terrific leaping save in the 67th minute. Foley just got his fingertips on Aaron Long’s centered shot, knocking it over the crossbar to keep the game tied.

UC Riverside responded by potting the game winner when Diaz Pizzaro took Richie Osborne’s feed and broke free down the left side. Foley came up to try and play the ball, but the UC forward moved around the slide attempt and slipped a shot from the left side for the eventual game-winner.

“Johnny made a great save and it should have given the team a boost after that,” JU head coach Mike Johnson said. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t gain the momentum after that great play. We still have one more non-conference game to get ready for our competitive Atlantic Sun Conference schedule.”

The Highlanders opened the scoring 34:40 into the game. Joseph O’Connor slid near the right post to direct Otis Earle’s centering pass, beating Foley before he could dive over.

But JU answered just 1:25 later. A foul inside the box drew a penalty kick attempt and Durr notched his team-leading third goal of the campaign, tying the score at 35:54.

The Dolphins built a 7-3 edge in corners in the second half and forged a 10-7 edge in shots. UC Riverside goalkeeper Cody Suppe posted four of his five saves in the second half, preserving the win for the Highlanders.

JU will head north to face Georgia Southern on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before A-Sun play commences with a trip to Mercer on Sunday at 7 p.m.
