Senior Daniele Campailla scored his first two goals of the season to lift the JU men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win at Mercer in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener on Sunday night in Macon, Ga.

Campailla notched his first goal 32:15 in to open the scoring and added a second goal in the 70th minute. Mercer’s Josh Shutter scored with 16:39 left, but the Bears could not complete the comeback bid.

Campailla’s second career two-goal game in a Dolphins uniform improved JU to 4-5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Mercer fell to 5-4-1 and 1-1-0.

“It’s always good when you can start conference play with a win, especially on the road,” JU coach Mike Johnson said. “Campailla came up big for us and it’s a good sign to see us score those first two goals and play with the lead.”

Sophomore Nick Rodriguez facilitated JU’s opening goal. The forward connected with Campailla on a one-time shot into the upper right-hand corner. The Dolphins took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Nearly 25 minutes into the second half, senior Tyler Williams sent a cross that Campailla drilled low to beat Mercer goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh for the second time. That marked the first time Campailla logged a multi-goal game since his two-goal effort versus USC Upstate on Oct. 17, 2010.

Sophomore goalkeeper Gavin Carlin made his JU debut, posting two saves in playing all 90 minutes. The 6-4 netminder made one save each in both halves. His only blemish came at 73:21 when Shutter scored off a set piece initiated by Carl Oscar-Anderson.

The Dolphins will next be in action on Friday when they host USC Upstate. Kickoff at the Ashley Sports Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
