Men's soccer suffer first conference loss
The Jacksonville University men’s soccer team scored an equalizing goal with few moments to spare to send the game against Florida Gulf Coast to overtime, but eventually fell in the extra period 2-1.
Senior midfielder Predrag Ivanovic scored the dramatic late goal with assistance from sophomore Nick Rodriguez and senior Stefan Durr.
The Dolphins were outshot 11-8 with Florida Gulf Coast enjoying a nine to five advantage in the second period and overtime combined.
The scoreless tie was ended in the 51st minute when Gulf Coast’s William Morse found the back of the net after a ball was crossed into the box and passed off to him to fire away.
The game remained 1-0 until the 88th minute when Ivanovic was able to tie the game up and send it to overtime.
The overtime period lasted only 3 minutes as FGCU’s Xavier Silva was able to strike a goal and secure the win.
With their assists on the Ivanovic’s goal, Durr and Rodriguez added to their team leading point totals that now tally 12 and 10 respectively.
The loss marks the first defeat that the Dolphins have incurred in conference play this season and knocks them out of the top spot in the standings. The team’s conference record now stands at 5-1-1, while Florida Gulf Coast has moved into first place with a record of 6-1-0.
The Dolphins will return to action on Sunday when they host the third place team of Stetson at the Ashley Sports Complex. This game will be played under the lights with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
