The JU men’s tennis team competed in the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional hosted by the University of Georgia this weekend in Athens, Ga.
Sophomore Larry Condez won the first round of the qualifying singles tournament, defeating FAU’s Robert Dubuque, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1 before falling in the second round to Stetson’s Didrik Berg. Condez lost his main-draw singles match to USF’s Lucas Martin-Salcedo, 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Jose Fantova lost in the opening round of the singles main draw, falling to UNF’s Maritz Buerchner, 7-5, 6-4. In doubles play, Fantova and Condez lost to Miami’s tandem of Victor Mauz and Santiago Nieto, 8-3, in the first round. Fantova capped the tournament by losing in the first round consolation singles bracket, falling in the first set, 6-2, before an injury forced him to retire.
Matt Hansen, the lone senior on the JU roster, lost a close first-round qualifying singles match to Georgia’s Eric Diaz, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Hansen and freshman Eduardo Martinez lost in first-round doubles play on Friday as Stetson’s Jacobo Herrero and Erik Halaj posted a 9-7 win.
Martinez started his tournament in strong fashion, winning his first-round qualifying match on Thursday. The Mexico City native beat UNF’s Timo Kranz, 6-3, 6-2, before losing to FSU’s Brian Alden, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round.
Junior Fernando Bano Lopez, who led the Dolphins with 11 singles victories in 2011, lost to eighth-seeded Wael Kiliani from USF, 6-1, 6-2, in the main-draw first round. Lopez also lost his first-round consolation match to Mauz.
But Lopez and freshman Richard Casagrande played well in the doubles draw, advancing to the round of 16 after beating a tandem from Georgia Tech, 8-6, in the second round. Casagrande also recorded a victory in his first-round qualifying match, needing three sets to knock off Stetson’s Jacobo Herrero, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 before losing in the second round to FAMU’s Chidi Gabriel, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
