Men's tennis goes out on a high note

The Jacksonville University men’s tennis team won its final match of the season and of the program as JU has decided not to continue competing in the future.  The Dolphins took down conference foe Kennesaw State to conclude the 2012 season.

2012 proved to be a tough year for the Dolphins going 4-17 overall and 2-7 in Atlantic Sun play.  Jacksonville tied Mercer for the eighth best conference record and did not qualify for the conference tournament.

Although the Dolphins were not able to string together many performances where everyone played their best, there was much individual success throughout the season.

Junior Fernando Banos Lopez and freshman Eduardo Martinez tied for the team high in individual match wins with eight.

The duo of Martinez and Eimon Heywood combined for nine doubles victories including going 4-4 in conference play.  Jose Fantova and Richard Casagrande found their stride as a team going 4-2 in the conference as partners playing each opponents best twosome.

JU’s most complete performance of the year came on March 17 when they hosted the USC Upstate Spartans.  The Dolphins took down their A-Sun opponents 5-2 overall with wins coming on courts 1,2,4, and 6.  Jacksonville also took two out of the three doubles matches as well to finish off the impressive victory.
