Women’s hoops host South Carolina State Thursday
The JU women’s basketball team returns from the holiday break to play South Carolina State in the final non-conference game of the season on Thursday in Swisher Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
Following the contest, the Dolphins (1-10) will get rude welcome back into the A-Sun schedule, playing six games in 13 days to start the New Year.
“Everybody had a great Christmas break and now we are excited to get back on the court,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “We are expecting to turn on season around and it begins with this game.”
Last time out, Georgia Southern used a 13-2 run to start the second half and fought off a late JU rally to defeat the Dolphins, 52-46, at Hanner Fieldhouse on Dec. 21.
The Dolphins won the rebounding battle, 41-38, and shot 34.5 percent from the floor (19-55). Senior Crystal Bell and sophomore Abril Peeples each paced the Dolphins with 14 points. Sophomore Tracie Sneed had 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
Bell has been hot as of late by leading the Dolphins in scoring in four of the last six games with double-digits in each contest.
The Lady Bulldogs (5-6) have won their last two games entering into Thursday’s contest. They beat Coastal Carolina, 61-59, at the Carolina’s Challenge on Dec. 18 before knocking off UNC-Asheville, 92-82, at home. Lauren Johnson, Tiana Hemphill and Trinese Fox each had 13 points in the latest win.
South Carolina State is led by Tiara Knotts, who is first in scoring (12.5) and steals (21).
The Dolphins have won both matchups in the all-time series. JU won a 61-58 decision in the last contest at South Carolina State on Dec. 29, 2007. They earned a 66-56 win at home on Nov. 17, 2006.
JU will begin the New Year at home against Lipscomb (Jan. 2) and Belmont (Jan. 4). The contest against the Lady Bisons was moved back to Swisher Gymnasium due to the traffic of the Taxslayers.com Gator Bowl contest.
