Women’s hoops falls to Lipscomb, 68-64
The JU women’s basketball team came up on the short end of a 68-64 decision to Lipscomb in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Thursday night in Allen Arena.
The Dolphins (7-14, 5-5 A-Sun) cut a second-half deficit to three on three occasions in the final eight minutes, but key buckets from Morgan Faulkner and Leah McAlister helped the Lady Bisons (4-17, 2-8) get the win.
Faulkner finished with 16 points, while Anna Bowers recorded 13 points to help the cause. McAlister and Haley Nelson each finished with 12 points for the Lady Bisons.
“We came up a little short,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “Our team did a great job of battling back, but Lipscomb made shots in the end. We need to work out the kinks quickly because we have another tough game Saturday.”
The Dolphins shot 46.4 percent from the floor (13-28) in the second half to stay close. JU also had 12 steals and hit 13 of 20 free throws. Lipscomb secured the win with nine three-pointers and 24 points in the paint.
With less than eight minutes remaining, the Dolphins made it 49-47 on a three-pointer from junior Maggie Wilson, but McAlister pushed the Lipscomb lead to 53-47 on a layup (5:08). Sophomore Jane’l Osborne had a three-point play to cut the lead in half before Hannah Phillips upstaged her with a three-point play on the other end. Sophomore Abril Peeples answered with a three-pointer to make it a 56-53 JU deficit, but Faulker and McAlister each added three-pointers to help Lipscomb take a 62-53 advantage. The Dolphins got a late basket from junior Tracie Sneed to make it 66-61 until a Bowers layup in the final seconds secured the win.
Peeples finished with 17 points to pace the Dolphins offensively. Osborne added 13 points, five boards and three steals off the bench. Sophomore Jade Cargill tallied 11 points.
In the first half, a layup by Peeples gave the Dolphins a 9-7 lead at 9:44. The Lady Bisons broke it open with an 11-2 run, capped on two Nelson three-pointers, for an 18-11 advantage (9:37). JU trimmed the deficit to 21-19 on three-point baskets from Sneed (8:40) and Peeples (6:04). Bowers had a three-pointer, but Cargill made a three-point play to pull the Dolphins to 27-24 with 2:18 left. The Dolphins went into the locker room trailing 29-28 after Peeples hit two free throws in the final seconds.
