Trip to Virginia on tap for JU women
The JU women’s lacrosse team takes off on its second weekend trip in three weeks with a pair of stops in Virginia.

The Dolphins (8-3, 2-1 NLC) meet a pair of National Lacrosse Conference opponents at Liberty Friday and Longwood Sunday and coach Mindy McCord wants her team to get back to basics.

The team has been off since beating Davidson on April 1 which followed its NLC loss to High Point two nights before.

“We’ve had the opportunity to back focusing on the basics,’’ McCord said. “I’m looking for them to be a very disciplined team. We had an opportunity to learn from our mistakes on the last trip and also focus on the successes we had.’’

The Dolphins take on Liberty at 7 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.

The Flames (2-8, 1-1) picked up their conference win in a forfeit over Howard when the Bison suspended athletic activity recently.

Senior attack Kristin Crowley and freshman attack Morgan Becker lead the Flames with 31 points each. Crowley has 27 goals and four assists while Becker has 24 goals, seven assists. Liberty is scoring at a 9.4 per game average and giving up about 15 points a game.

Sunday in Farmville, Va., the Dolphins take on the Lancers (1-9, 0-1) at 1 p.m.

The Longwood offense is led by a pair of midfielders in junior Jaime Brentlinger and senior Jessica Rudloff, both of whom have 20 points.

Coming off an extended time off, the Dolphins, 2-2 in their last four games, are looking to get back on track and finish strong heading into the NLC tournament in early May.

Offensively, sophomores Ali Hoffman, Morgan Derner and Jen Cosgrove are leading the way. Hoffman has 33 points (22 goals/11 assists), Derner 26 points (all on goals) and Cosgrove 26 (22/4).

Hoffman also has 13 ground balls and eight caused turnovers.

Senior Jess Hotchkiss leads the team in ground balls with 19 and she and defender Rachel Hannon both have 15 caused turnovers. Hannon also has 57 draw controls, the school’s single-season record in the category.
