JU puts successful end to regular season
Junior Jen Cosgrove had a hat trick and six player scored two goals each +as Jacksonville University ended its regular season and celebrated its first-ever Senior Day with a 22-6 win over Presbyterian College in a National Lacrosse conference game Saturday.
The Dolphins (12-4, 6-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 5:05 of the game as the team’s leading scorer, Ali Hoffman had an unassisted goal and that was followed by goals from Kaitlin Stewart and a pair from sophomore Morgan Derner, her 36th and 37th of the year.
Hoffman wound up with two goals giving her 55 points for the season.
At 4-1, JU went on another tear with a 7-0 run which included goals from defender Rachel Hannon, Hoffman, Brittney Orashen, senior Kayleigh Hynes, freshman Holly Ventimiglia, Amanda Hurley and Cosgrove. Cosgrove score her second with 2:03 to play in the first half and a 12-2 lead.
Senior Melissa Jaworski scored twice in the second half as did midfielder Ellyn Spangenberg and Hynes, Orashen, Cosgrove, Nicole Albino, Carly Garrison and Angela Sperbeck rounded out the effort.
Hannon had 13 draw controls giving her 104 for the season, a school record and senior Jess Hotchkiss had seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Hoffman had three assist and Hynes two as the latter played her last home game.
JU fired 53 shots at three Presbyterian goal keepers as for the third time this season every Dolphin who dressed out played.
Goal keepers Karli Tobin and Asia Moore combined for seven saves on 15 Blue Hose (2-15, 1-6) shots.
Catherine Ellis and Brianne Ward led Presbyterian with two goals each.
JU ends the regular season second in the NLC and seeded second in next week’s NLC tournament in Davidson, N.C. The team will begin tourney play Friday.
