Dolphins showered with preseason accolades
The Jacksonville University softball team has been picked to repeat as both the regular season and Atlantic Sun Tournament champions. The Dolphins also claimed both the preseason player and pitcher of the year honors. In total, three Dolphins were named to the all-conference team.
JU was voted as preseason A-Sun champions by the league coaches receiving nine out of a possible ten first place votes. The Dolphins were also predicted to be the A-Sun Tournament champions and advance to the NCAA Tournament. This comes as no surprise as the Dolphins return seven starters from last season’s championship team.
One of the returners is the reigning A-Sun pitcher of the year, Sarah Sigrest. After setting school records in wins (27), ERA (1.10), and strikeouts (208) as a junior, naturally Sigrest was voted as preseason pitcher of the year and a unanimous all-conference selection.
Joining Sigrest on the all-conference team is junior catcher Sarah Simon. With a strong 2011 campaign under her belt in which she led the Dolphins in average (.365), triples (3), and home runs (10), Simon was voted as the A-Sun preseason player of the year and an all-conference first team selection.
The final member of the Dolphins selected to the A-Sun all-conference team is senior infielder Amanda Schmidt. She was a unanimous selection returning for her final year after a stellar junior season. Schmidt belted nine home runs and set a team record with 50 RBI while being named to the 2011 all-conference team.
The Dolphins kickoff their season February 10th when they take on Buffalo at the JU Softball Complex.
