Dolphins charge out of the gates in 2012
The Jacksonville University softball team started its 2012 season with a 6-2 win over Buffalo in their first game of the Wingate by Wyndham Opening Weekend Tournament and earned new head coach Ali Higgs her first ever head coaching victory.
The Dolphins used a four run first to build a lead that Bulls could never overcome.
Reigning Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year Sarah Sigrest pitched a complete game for the Dolphins giving up only three hits and two runs while striking out seven
JU won many of their team record 44 wins last year by outscoring opponents in the first inning and that trend has continued in this first game of 2012. Senior Kayla Ouellet led off with a walk and quickly stole second. Second baseman Karson Tuck doubled to bring Ouellet home before being brought around herself when Amanda Schmidt doubled. The Dolphins were able two add to more runs in the inning by drawing walks and capitalizing on a Buffalo error.
The Bulls made a little noise in the third when they were able to use two hits to produce their only two runs of the game. Left fielder Holly Luciano singled to right center to drive in the designated player Kristin Waldron. Luciano scored as well when Caitlin Dekker singled.
Sigrest was able to shut down Buffalo the rest of the way not letting them get a hit after that third inning and looked like the pitcher who went 27-7 last year.
Preseason A-Sun Player of the Year Sarah Simon showed why she was given the honor by going three for three at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Schmidt and Tuck both went two for four while driving in a run.
Higgs head coaching career couldn’t have started better. “It feels great to get my first win as a head coach in our first game of the season but all the credit goes to the players. They came out focused and ready to play from the first pitch to the last.”
The Dolphins moved to 1-0 on the season after the win and got ready to retake the diamond to face the UNCG Spartans in the night cap of the first day of the tournament.
