Stranded runners doom Dolphins
JU was unable to overcome leaving ten runners on base Friday when they fell to the Villanova Wildcats 3-1 in Miami at the Blue and Gold Felsberg Memorial hosted by FIU.
The Dolphins had several scoring opportunities that they could not capitalize on leading them to drop their fifth game in a row. During this current five game skid, the Dolphins have only managed to score a total of six runs while giving up a combined 23.
Perhaps the biggest missed opportunity was in the bottom of the second inning when JU had the bases loaded with no outs and failed to advance the runners. Back to back singles by Amanda Schmidt and Meagan Balding led off the inning for the Dolphins. Brittany Eppley was then able to draw a walk to load the bases. The JU threat was shut down just as quick as it came about as Villanova pitcher Molly Manning got Jacey Warner and Codi Kelly to strike out followed by Ronnie Gajownik fouling out to the catcher.
The Wildcats followed the Dolphins missed opportunity by scoring three runs of their own in the top of the third. They scored all three runs with two outs in the inning off of three hits and two stolen bases.
Senior Sarah Sigrest (1-3) went all seven innings for the Dolphins giving up three runs off of five hits while striking out six.
The lone run of the game for the Dolphins came in the fifth when Sarah Simon doubled for one of her two team leading hits. Freshman Adrienne Ramsay pinch ran for Simon and advanced to third when Amanda Schmidt was safe at first after a fielding error by the third baseman. Schmidt then attempted to steal second but was caught in the process. Ramsay took advantage of the situation and was able to get home safely on the play.
JU (2-5) will look to right the ship on Saturday when they take on the University of Illinois-Chicago at 9:00 am followed by Providence at 11:00 am.
