Dolphins finish 3-1 on the weekend after 5-0 win Sunday
The Jacksonville softball team downed the Penn Quakers 5-0 on Sunday for its third win of the weekend and fifth in its last six games.
Sarah Sigrest (7-3) pitched a shutout for the second time in as many games and her third of the 2012 season. She went all seven innings striking out nine Quaker batters while allowing six hits. Sigrest now has 80 strikeouts on the year.
The Dolphins jumped out to any early lead posting three runs in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Kayla Ouellet started things off with an infield single. She stole second and advanced to third after the Penn catcher made a bad throw trying to get the out. Second baseman Karson Tuck was then struck by a pitch on her knee ending her day. Freshman Adrienne Ramsay entered the game as a pinch runner and stole second and advanced to third when the shortstop could not field the throw cleanly from the catcher. Ouellet came home from third on the play giving the Dolphins the 1-0 lead. Sarah Simon then helped add to the JU lead by singling to left bringing in Ramsay for the run and the RBI. JU added one more run after Amanda Schmidt singled to left and the left fielder misplayed the ball allowing Simon to come home.
JU held the Penn offense in check for the rest of the game and added runs in the second and sixth innings leading to the final score of 5-0.
Seven Dolphin batters had hits on the afternoon with Simon and Schmidt both recording RBI’s. JU had five different players steal a base in the game bringing the team total to 31 on the year.
JU (11-9) ends the weekend on a three game winning streak and will return to action on Wednesday, March 7th for a double header against Delaware State at the JU Softball Complex.
