Dolphins split with Bears

The Jacksonville University softball team split a pair of games in Macon, Georgia on Friday against the Mercer Bears.  JU lost the first game 6-2, then rebounded to take game two 3-0.

Seniors Brittany Eppley and Amanda Schmidt provided the offense and defense in game two that propelled JU to the Atlantic Sun victory.

The Dolphins out to a 2-0 lead in game one thanks to a two run home run off the bat of Jacey Warner in the top of the second inning.  After a ground out to start off the inning, Freshman Ashley Simon singled through the left side.  Warner then came up to the plate and belted a shot over the left center fence to put the Dolphins up and score the first runs of the game.

The lead would be short lived as the Bears would counter with three runs of their own of the Dolphins Sarah Sigrest (13-8) in the bottom half of the inning.   An RBI single was followed by a two run home run to give Mercer the 3-2 lead after two innings of play.

The Bears would go on to add three more insurance runs, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to secure the game one victory for Mercer.

Eppley took the mound for JU in game two and had her best performance of her Dolphin career.  She went all seven innings allowed no runs on seven hits while striking out a career high 13 batters.

The Dolphin bats were held relatively in check throughout the whole game except for in the top of the third inning.  Codi Kelly reached base after she was hit by a pitch and then proceeded to steal second.  Sarah Simon was intentionally walked to bring up Schmidt with runners on first and second.  Schmidt would make the Bears pay as she lifted a ball high into the air to left field that was just hit hard enough to leave the park for the three run home run.  It was Schmidt’s fifth home run of the season.

Eppley continued to fool the Bears batters and seemed to always get the timely strikeout to get out a jam when Mercer was threatening.

JU (21-17, 3-3) will travel to Kennesaw State to take on the Owls for a double header Saturday scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
