Softball to play crucial matchup against cross-town rival UNF
With both teams battling for a spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference Softball Tournament, the rivalry between Jacksonville and North Florida will be taken to another level today when the two teams play a double header.
Both teams enter the day with an identical 7-7 conference record. The A-Sun standings are as tight as ever with nine teams still alive battling for the six spots in the tournament. If either team sweeps today’s games, it would prove to devastating for the losing team’s chances of getting in.
Senior Brittany Eppley has pitched her best softball of her career in conference play this season. She leads the team in every major pitching statistic for the Dolphins. She currently has a 5-3 record with a 1.87 ERA and an impressive 58 strikeouts to just five walks.
Eppley is not the only Dolphin that has elevated their play in conference games as second baseman Karson Tuck has come alive of late at the plate. She is third on the team with a .333 average, but leads JU with three home runs. She has had a home run against each of the last three conference opponents.
The Ospreys have been led by pitcher Kaylie Wallace who has made seven starts and posted a 2-2 record. She has a 2.53 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings of work.
UNF is batting .253 with 40 runs scored as a team in A-Sun play compared to the .283 average and 53 runs scored of JU.
The pivotal doubleheader will take place at the UNF Softball Complex with game one scheduled to start at 5:00 pm. The Ospreys will be honoring their seniors before the game as part of Senior Night.
