Dolphins Participate in Southeast Regional Championships
Members of the Jacksonville University women’s tennis team traveled to Gainesville, Fla., over the weekend to participate in the 2011 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships. The singles and doubles tournament hosted by the University of Florida featured teams competing from 16 schools from throughout the southeast region.

The Dolphin participants in the tournament were freshman Aline Staudt and sophomore Natalia Marques Melibeu. Staudt faced Carolina De Los Santos of Florida State in the first round and fell 7-6, 6-0. However, in the consolation bracket, Staudt was able to defeat Melissa Bolivar from the University of Miami, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 before falling in the next round. Melibeu lost 6-0, 6-3 to Georgia sophomore Kate Fuller in her first round matchup.

The two teamed up for the doubles portion of the tournament and won their opening match 8-6 over the South Florida pair of Lucie Rey and Kate Parker, but lost their next match 8-2 to the Florida duo of Alex Cercone and Sofie Oyen.

The tournament was an excellent time for the young Dolphin players to get some valuable experience against quality opponents.

Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia won the singles title and teamed up with Lilly Kimbell to also take home the doubles title.
