VOLLEYBALL BLOG: Alison Loeppky Edition (9/19)
After losing two of our starting players, our coaches got to the drawing board to put together a new line up. This involved new rotations and new positions for several players on the team. Practices on Tuesday and Wednesday were devoted to learning this new line up which seemed very promising. Heading to Orlando for the Towne Place Suites/UCF challenge, we were confident and excited for what our team was going to produce.

On Friday, we began with a lesson from coach John (McCallum) on a theory himself and Bert (Einstein) came up with on volleyball physics. Equipped with our new secret formula - we were ready to get playing.

We opened the tournament against FIU. Unfortunately too many errors on our side of the court led to a quick three-set loss. Although we were disconcerted from the night’s match, we supported our fellow Dolphins and head out to the soccer field to cheer on our women’s soccer team as they took on the UCF Knights. We witnessed the Dolphins’ goal and some spectacular saves - clearly a result of our superior cheering. We returned to the hotel with hopes of learning from the night’s match and preparing ourselves for the next one.

We started Saturday’s match off slowly but built up momentum as we took on the UTEP Miners. Points rallied back and forth but unfortunately ended up in favour of the other team. Although we lost a tough five-set match, we were still happy with the improvements we showed from the night before.

On Sunday, we looked to progress even further as we headed back to Swisher Gymnasium to play Troy University in front of our fans. Home court advantage didn’t seem to prove true as we dropped another three-set match to the Trojans, leaving us with a heavy 0-3 record for the weekend.

We definitely got knocked down this weekend but we won’t let this shape the rest of our season. This weekend marked the end of another chapter as preseason play came to an end. We will have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get back in the gym focused on our goals we set for the season.

With conference play starting just a few short days away, we will have to decide how we want to take the results from the weekend and turn them to our advantage. We can learn from our mistakes and use them to make us stronger. We are a young team and still have much to learn if we want to see that conference ring on our fingers at the end of the year.
