Volleyball battles Mercer in final A-Sun road trip Saturday
Despite it being a light week, the JU volleyball has quite an important match against Mercer at 3 p.m. Saturday in Macon, Ga.
The Dolphins (11-15, 3-6 A-Sun) and the Bears (9-16, 2-6) are two of the four teams battling to what will shake out as the final two spots in the A-Sun Tournament.
“Mercer is always a tough place to play, but I expect us to be up for the challenge,” JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg said. “We have had a solid week of practice so I am excited for us to play.”
Last week, the Dolphins fell in five-set matches to North Florida and Florida A&M, but managed to came away with a 3-1 victory against Bethune-Cookman.
Senior Alliya Drzewiecki recorded 26 kills in three matches to pace the Dolphins, while senior Kathryn Kane had two double-digit kill efforts and 21 digs at UNF.
Despite the up and down week, the Dolphins currently boast three of the top 10 hitters in the A-Sun. Sophomore Kylie Jacob ranks first with an .340 hitting average, while junior Alison Loeppky (.291) and sophomore Alyssa Robertson (.285) are ranked fifth and sixth, respectively.
Sophomore Kendall Courtney ranks first in overall assists (1,045) and second in service aces (44) in the A-Sun.
Mercer will host UNF Friday night before playing the Dolphins the next day. Last time out, the Bears lost to East Tennessee State, but ended the weekend with a 3-1 win vs. USC Upstate.
Jennifer Katona (214) and Amiee Frutchey (203) each have more than 200 kills for the Bears. Katona also leads in blocks with 82, while Charlotte Harris has 383 digs.
In the first meeting, the Dolphins were able to squeak out a 3-2 win at Swisher Gymnasium on Sept. 30.
Loeppky recorded 15 kills to lead four Dolphins with double-digit kills. Jacob tallied 14 kills, while Kane had 12 kills and two service aces in her first match back from injury. Robertson recorded 10 kills and eight blocks to help the cause.
