Sophomore Kendall Courtney and freshman Cari Whitmire earned all-tournament honors as the JU sand volleyball team placed fifth at the North Florida Invitational Sunday in Jacksonville Beach.

Courtney and Whitmire finished tied for third in the Gold bracket of the tournament to secure the accolades for JU.

Florida State won the team title followed by Hawaii and College of Charleston. UNF, JU, UAB and Florida Atlantic rounded out the rest of the group.

"It was a great weekend for JU Sand Volleyball," JU head coach Michelle Collier said. "Our two top teams had a tremendous tournament finishing in the top 10. Our girls are working hard and I was extremely proud of them and the way they competed."

Courtney and Whitmire rode a 4-2 mark in pool play to the top bracket. After winning the first match due to medical forfeit, the duo earned a 2-1 win (21-16, 16-21, 22-2) over UAB’s top flight. Courtney and Whitmire would fall in the semifinals to Brittany Tiegs and Aurora Newgard from Florida State, 2-0 (23-21, 21-16).

Freshman Sammie Strausbaugh and sophomore Niatha Cullen also joined Courtney and Whitmire in the Gold Bracket after posting a 5-1 record in pool play. They fell in the first round to Florida State’s fifth pair, but downed UAB’s Heather Thomas and Kirsten Gallagher, 2-1 (25-23, 18-21, 15-11), in the consolation round.

Junior Nicole Teplitz and sophomore Alyssa Robertson represented JU in the sliver bracket. Freshman Chelsea Sanderson, senior Kathryn Kane, freshman Jenna Orner and junior Alison Loeppky competed in the Bronze bracket.

The Dolphins will have their final duals match of the year at Stetson on April 10 in DeLand, Fla.
