Pirates defeat Dolphins 16-9 in game two of series

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The East Carolina Pirates defeated the JU Dolphins 16-9 in game two of weekend game series.

The JU Dolphins have been plagued by the big inning all season. The ECU Pirates scored four runs in the third, three runs in the fifth and seven runs in the sixth. The Pirates ended the day with a total of 20 hits.

The day started off well for the Dolphins. Jake Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla./Santa Fe College) homered in the bottom half of the first inning to put the Dolphins up 1-0.

The Pirates scored four runs on three hits in the top half of the third to take a 4-1 lead over the Dolphins.

The Dolphins answered back quickly Zachary Houck (Orange Park, Fla./Eagles View Academy) led of with a bunt single. Huxtable singled to right advancing Howck to third. One out later Drew Luther (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton College) singled to left scoring Houck. Alex McRae (West Allis, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) followed with a single that scored a Huxtable. Brady North (Tampa, Fla./Hillsboro CC) walked to load the bases for Scott Schaub (Ocala, Fla./College of Central Florida). Schaub then lifted a sacrifice fly to center tying the score at 4-4. Freshman Nate Ricci (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) the followed with his fist collegiate hit and RBI to put the Dolphins up 5-4.

ECU then added three runs on four hits in the top half of the fifth off losing pitcher Zach Gordon (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg College) (1-4) to take the lead 7-5.

ECU then exploded for seven runs in the top half of the sixth to bust the game wide open. The Pirates scored seven runs on seven hits and one Dolphin error.

The Dolphins would add a run in the bottom of the sixth. Houck singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Huxtable then ripped his third hit of the day scoring Houck. Nathan Koslowski (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) then doubled but Huxtable and Koslowski were left stranded in scoring position.

The Dolphins would push two more runs across in the bottom of the seventh. North walked and two outs later Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, N.Y./FSCJ) tripled scoring North. Loosen then scored on an infield single by Houck.

The Dolphins scored a lone run in the bottom of the eighth. Koslowski singled and stole second. Braddock Rowe (Jacksonville, Fla./South Georgia College) then ripped a one out double scoring Koslowski to round out the scoring.

Both teams combined for 38 hits and 25 runs scored on Saturday afternoon at John Sessions Stadium.
