JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The JU Dolphins split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins won game one 6-4 and lost the nightcap 19-7.

The JU Dolphins (9-15 2-1) and the USC Upstate Spartans (13-9 2-4) had to wait over 24 hours to play game two but the action started quickly.

Michael Babb (Jacksonville, Fla./Bartram Trail) led of the bottom of the first inning with a double. Jake Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla./Santa Fe College) sacrificed him to third and Nathan Koslowski (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) followed with an RBI groundout scoring Babb.

Jacksonville exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the second. Brady North (Tampa, Fla./Hillsboro CC) led off with a single. Kris Molter (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) followed with a single and Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, N.Y./FSCJ) was hit by a pitch loading the bases. One batter later Dylan Dillard (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) doubled to center plating two Dolphins. One out later Huxtable singled through the left side to put the Dolphins up 5-0.

Upstate would not go quietly scoring two runs on three hits in the top half of the third to make it 5-2 off of starting pitcher Zach Gordon (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg College).

The Spartans would rally again in the top half of the sixth scoring 2 runs on three hits and one Dolphin error. Alex McRae (West Allis, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) came in and retired the final batter of the inning to shut down the Spartans and leave the game at 5-4.

The Dolphins answered back in the bottom half of the sixth with a much-needed insurance run. Dillard homered over the left center wall to put the Dolphins ahead 6-4.

That was all that McRae would need. The sophomore right-hander pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief to record his first save of the season.

Gordon pitched 5 2/3 innings tying his longest outing of the year only allowing four runs on nine hits to move his record to (2-4) on the season.

In game two, the Spartans scored 19 runs on 19 hits to take the final game of the series avoiding the sweep by a score of 19-7. Nathan Koslowski and Jake Huxtable each had three hits in the nightcap for the Dolphins. Garrett Ruckel (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) and Alex McRae both ended game two with a pair of hits and a pair of RBI’s. McRae recorded his first homerun of the 2013 campaign in the bottom half of the fifth inning.

The Dolphins will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon from Statesboro, Ga. as they face the Georgia Southern Eagles at 6pm. All of the action can be followed live on www.judolphins.com.
