Dolphins defeat Bears 5-2 in ASUN action
MACON, Ga. -- The JU Dolphins (10-18, 3-3 Asun) defeated the Mercer Bears (23-8, 6-3 Asun) 5-2 in matinee action at Claude Smith Field in Macon, Ga.
The Bears got started early with an unearned run on two hits and a Dolphin error in the bottom half of the first inning.
The Dolphins scratched across a run in the top half of the fourth. Jake Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla./Santa Fe College) reached on an error. Nathan Koslowski (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) followed with a perfectly executed hit and run advancing Huxtable to third. Huxtable then scored on a ground out by Brady North (Tampa, Fla./Hillsboro CC).
The Dolphins erupted for three runs in the top of the sixth. Garrett Ruckel (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) led of with a single to left. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zachary Houck (Orange Park, Fla./Eagles View Academy). Koslowski walked setting the stage for Brady North (Tampa, Fla./Hillsboro CC). North ripped the first pitch he saw inside the right field foul pole to put the Dolphins up 4-1.
The Bears loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Alex McRae (West Allis, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) worked out of a bases loaded no out jam with a pair of pop outs and an inning ending strikeout to squash the rally.
McRae was replaced in the bottom half of the seventh after going six innings, walking three and striking out three. He only allowed one unearned run in leveling his season record at (2-2).
The Dolphins pushed across an insurance run in the top half of the ninth. Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, N.Y./FSCJ) led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Baker (Sussez, Wis./University School). Kris Molter (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) reached on an infield single moving Loosen to third. Freshman Nate Ricci (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) then looped a single to left putting the Dolphins up 5-1.
Jeff Tanner (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) replaced McRae in the seventh retiring the first six Bears he faced. Tanner then worked out of a bases loaded and no out jam in the bottom of the ninth to record his first save of the year. Tanner allowed one unearned run in three innings of relief.
