ETSU Takes Game One of Series 3-2
JOHNSON CITY, TN.- The East Tennessee State University Buccaneers (30-22,15-10 A-Sun) defeated the JU Dolphins (17-36, 8-17 A-Sun) 3-2 in Atlantic Sun Conference action at Thomas Stadium on Thursday evening.
The Bucs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly to center.
The Dolphins answered with a run in the top half of the fourth inning. Braddock Rowe (Jacksonville, Fla./South Georgia College) reached on a two base error and scored on an Ethan Loosen (Uniondale, N.Y./FSCJ) double off the base of the wall to tie the game at 1-1.
The Dolphins added a run in the top half of the fifth on Dylan Dillard’s (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) fifth homerun of the year. The blast to left field was only the second homerun of the year allowed by Bucs starter Kerry Doane making it 2-1 Dolphins. The Bucs pushed across a run in the bottom half of the fifth inning on a pair of singles and a Dolphin throwing error to knot the game at 2-2.
The Bucs added a run in the bottom half of the sixth inning chasing Dolphin starting pitcher Jeff Tanner (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal). Tanner in his best outing of the year pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out one and walking one.
The Dolphins threatened in the top half of the eighth inning. Zachary Houck (Orange Park, Fla./Eagles View Academy) led off with a bunt single and one out later Nathan Koslowski (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) singled to left. The rally was thwarted when Drew Luther (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton College) grounded sharply into an inning ending double play.
The Dolphins worked out of a jam in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Adam Maxon (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) pitched his way out of a runners on the corners and one out jam keeping it at a 3-2 Bucs lead.
The Dolphins attempted a rally in the top of the ninth Loosen reached on a two out walk and then stole second. Jake Huxtable (Winter Springs, Fla./Santa Fe College) then was robbed of a game tying single on a diving catch by Bucs center fielder Andrew Green.
Jeff Tanner (0-3) was the hard luck loser pitching his best game of the 2013 campaign.
