Charlene Charles earns spot in the NCAA Championships
Junior Charlene Charles will represent the JU track & field team in the heptathlon at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa June 6.
Charles earned her spot into the NCAA meet by posting the 22nd best mark nationally (5,422 points) in winning the Lynchburg College Heptathlon May 8. It will be the second time in her career she made the NCAA Championships after earning a spot as a freshman.
“I am so proud of and happy for Charlene,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “She has been so unlucky with injuries. She has worked so to get back to the NCAA Championships. Being in the meet is a great reward, but she has goals for becoming All American.”
At the Lynchburg College Heptathlon, Charles won the 100-meter hurdles (14.10), high jump (5’7.75”), long jump (18’11.25”) and 800-meter (2:15.41). She posted a personal-best throw of 33’10” (6th) in the shot put and finished fourth in the 200-meter in 24.79. Charles also had a throw of 94’10” in the javelin.
Charles will compete in the long jump with the Dolphins at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville starting May 24.
