Charles earns USTFCCCA second team All-America honors
Junior JU track & field athlete Charlene Charles was tabbed second team All-America by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following her strong performance at the NCAA Championships June 7.
Charles scored a personal-best 5,477 points in the heptathlon en route to becoming the program’s fourth All-America honoree. She also joins Andrea Pressley as the only two Dolphins to receive the honor for the heptathlon.
“Charlene should be proud of her accomplishments thus far at JU,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “Yet, I know she has even greater goals for her senior season.”
In the NCAA heptathlon, she placed fifth in the long jump (19’6.25”) and sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5’6.5”. She ran a time of 24.59 (10th) in the 200-meter and 14.07 (16th) in the 100-meter hurdles. Charles finished eighth in the 800-meter in 2:15.61.
Charles also had a throw of 34’1.5” in the shot put and a throw of 97’0” in the javelin.
Overall, the French native was the first Dolphin to compete in the NCAA Championships since Natasha Harvey was in the long jump in 2009. She was also the first Dolphin in the NCAA heptathlon since Pressley in 2004.
