The Jacksonville University football team has been picked to finish third in this year’s Pioneer Football League race in a vote of league coaches.

The Dolphins, PFL champs in 2010, garnered 35 points in the poll to finish behind favored San Diego (79) and Drake (71), the teams that tied for the league title in 2011.

Dayton is predicted to finish fourth followed by Campbell, Marist, Butler, Morehead State, Davidson and Valparaiso.

San Diego picked up eight first-place votes while Drake and Dayton got one each. No coach could vote for his own team.

JU, 7-4 last season and 6-2 in the PFL, has lost record-setting quarterback Josh McGregor and record-setting wide receiver Josh Philpart to graduation, but coach Kerwin Bell is optimistic about the upcoming season.

“It goes to the point that we’ve got a pretty big turnover on offense (two starters return) but we feel very comfortable with the new guys here,’’ Bell said. “We feel like the new guys are going to come on and we’re going to be very good on offense although we’re going to be young.’’

Bell is looking to the defense, which has eight starters returning, to carry the load.

“Championships are won with defense and we’re going to have probably our best defensive unit we’ve ever had here so we’re very comfortable with where we sit heading into camp.’’

Camp begins Monday for the Dolphins with the season opener set Sept. 1 at Georgia Southern.
