The Twins trailed 6-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning to the Burlington Bees (Rookie Affiliate, Kansas City Royals) in the best of three series. The Bees walked the first two batters to start the frame, but bounced back with two straight outs. The Twins loaded the bases and scratched across two runs with a hit by pitch and wild pitch.
Walker II followed with a three-run homer to left-center field to tie the contest and keep the Twins’ season going. DJ Hicks later won the game for the Twins in the 11th inning on a full-count, two-out grand slam to give Elizabethton its fifth title in the last 10 years.
"I knew I had a chance. I put a barrel on it and hit the ball hard and it went out," Walker told MiLB.com. "It was a great feeling to see all my teammates and the excitement on their faces. We believed we had a chance to tie it up and the energy and excitement from that gave us momentum. I gave my team a chance to win, and I'm just glad at the end of the day we came out on top."
Walker II finished his first pro season ranked first in the league in home runs (14), fourth in RBI (45) and runs scored (44) and fifth (115) in total bases. He hit three home runs between the two Appy league playoff series and was named the league’s hitter of the week from Aug. 6-12.
“We are happy for Adam,” JU head coach Terry Alexander said. “He ended the season as a champion. We have always known he was capable of some big-time at-bats and he proved it in the final. We look forward to following his progress up the ladder.”
At JU in 2012, Walker II was named first team all-conference for the second straight season by leading the Dolphins in average (.343), hits (72), runs scored (44), doubles (14), home runs (12), RBI (42), total bases (122) and on-base percentage (.426). He was also second in stolen bases (19) and walks (29).
Walker II finished his JU career in the top five all-time at JU in doubles (53, 4th), home runs (41, 3rd), RBI (175, 4th), total bases (409, 4th) and slugging percentage (.635, 4th). He is seventh all-time in hits at 231.
Walker II was a third round selection for the Twins in the 2012 draft, JU’s 100th overall draftee all-time.
The Dolphins begin fall practice in late September at John Sessions Stadium.
