Paladins take down Dolphins

The JU women’s soccer team fell to the Furman University Paladins 3-1 Saturday afternoon in Greenville, South Carolina.

After falling behind early in the first half, the Dolphins quickly responded with a goal of their own to tie it up.  The Paladins scored in the 21st minute off of a corner kick to break the scoreless tie.  A minute later, junior forward Raquel Weckhurst scored her first goal of the year off a pass from freshman Sarah Moghadas knotting it up at one.  The game would remain tied for only five minutes as Furman was able to get the go-ahead goal off of another corner and retake the lead that they would not relinquish.

The Paladins would add another goal in the second half to bring the game to the final score of 3-1.

"We have to get better on our set pieces and corners," said Dolphin head coach Brian Copham.  "We can't dig ourselves into a whole like we did against a good team like Furman and expect to win.  There were times when we played well in small spurts, but we have to get all 11 players on the same page for the whole game."

The Dolphins were outshot by the Paladins 12-9.  Senior Emily Culbreth led JU with four shot attempts.

JU (2-4-1) split the pair of games they played on this most recent road trip through South Carolina with the win coming against Presbyterian on Thursday night.  The Dolphins return to action at home when they host the College of Charleston on September 14.
